Support Service Provider

General Description
Support Service Providers (SSP) are responsible for providing access and support throughout the client's vocational training period. Under the supervision and training of the Deaf-Blind Employment Access Specialist the SSP's will provide transitional training in independent living skills related to employment and employment follow-up and support. The SSP will also be responsible for providing communication and sighted guide support for all clients preparing for work. Working with clients may be at various locations: the LightHouse, in the community working with collaborative agencies in providing employment skills training, at a work-site or in the client's home.

Qualifications
Education:
AA degree with three years experience in providing services to persons with hearing and/or vision loss. Fluency in American Sign Language required.

Experience:
Sensitivity and awareness of the unique communication needs of persons who are deaf-blind. Ability to communicate in a variety of communication modes (e.g. ASL, Signed English, visual and tactile, written, typing and/or assistive listening devices). Experience in teaching or teaching assistance preferred.

Other:
Willingness and ability to travel independently, must be flexible in order to meet the individualized needs and goals of the client. Excellent interpersonal and problem solving skills. Basic computer skills preferred. Good writing and reading skills.

Accountabilities

• Assist Deaf-Blind Employment Access Specialist in providing employee job and work-site orientation training or teaching job tasks.

• Provide transportation assistance and/or coordination.

• Assist the client with orientation to work-site environment and immediate work area.

• Provide assistance to the client during classroom or individual training.

• Tutor or provide follow-up training/instruction under the direction of the Deaf-Blind Employment Access Specialist or community trainer.

• Provide assistance in daily living skills, e.g. shopping, accompanying to medical appointment as instructed by the Employment Access Specialist or as the training/tasks relate to job preparation or employment skills training.

• Provide access to print for written materials, e-mail or internet search.

• Assist with labeling in large print or Braille.

• Provide assistance with filling out forms in written or electronic format.

• Other duties as assigned.
