I am so-oo glad you are now podcasting the supermarket ads. When AIS went away, I missed the ads most. As you blogged earlier, most blind newshounds today can get local newspapers through bookshare or NFB newsline. We can download podcasts, read blogs and find much more on the internet than a radio reading service could ever hope to provide. But one thing that is often not accessible are ads. The Safeway ads, for example appear on their website, and Wendy often reads out loud directly from the website. But many sighted people may not know that these ads are pictures of text; they are not accessible with a screen reader.
When a picture, rather than actual words appears on a website, the screen reader can read out its alt tag, or its filename, but it cannot read the content of the picture. This is handy when the browsing experience is disrupted by unwanted and inaccessible ads, because the blind user can avoid them. But when you want to read the ads, it's a problem. Each week before I go to the grocery I really like to know what's on sale. Please, please thank Wendy, Jerry and Judy for all the hard work and time spent reading those ads. I save my family lots of cash thanks to their efforts!
Unfortunately, I couldn't comment directly on the new ad-casts because comments there were disabled, but I'm commenting here in the posting of Bill Barker's cast. Thanks again, ever so much!

As a long-time Bill Barker fan, it is cool to see his program will continue via podcast. I work with students who have learning disabilities, and have often shared his broadcasts with them. The clarity of his voice and measured pace of his reading bring audio material to many students who have never tried listening to audiobooks before and realize that their learning difference will require them to study via audio. Bill's broadcasts give them the needed listening skills practice without the fear that accompanies studying for an important test using an incomprehensible textbook! q

Hi,

We're a man and woman guitar and mandolin duo with all kinds of original songs and tight harmonies. We perform in Marin county and we are expanding our reach to do more events, etc. Jan has been blind from birth but that hasn't stopped her from becoming a really great mandolin player and playing all over the country. If you have any info about venues and events we could play, we would be interested. You can contact me (DickyGee) at 415-482-0450, or Jan at 415-459-3421. Thanks!
