Volunteer Opportunities
Personal Service Providers
At the LightHouse, our largest need is for Personal Service Providers (PSPs). We see an increasing number of newly blind clients who request this service. PSPs work one-on-one with clients, assisting with everyday activities such as reading mail, organization, running errands, getting exercise, or simple companionship. We place PSP's all over the Bay Area, so if you have a particular preference in a region please let us know.
Readers for Access to Information Services (AIS)
The LightHouse brings literature, information and local news to the blind and visually impaired. Through our Access to Information Services (AIS) department, we maintain a reading service that allows the blind and visually impaired to access much of the information that would typically be inaccessible to people with low vision. The services offered by this department are largely dependent upon the support of volunteers like you. By reading local news and time-sensitive information, either live or recorded, you offer the blind and visually impaired community equal access to the printed word.
General Administrative Services
In conjunction with our client services, the LightHouse has a fair amount of administrative activity that goes on behind the scenes to support our program offerings. Some common tasks that we need assistance with are clerical duties, bulk mailings, Braille transcription and retail services in our adaptive devices store. By volunteering to assist with these tasks, you help the LightHouse extend and deliver our services to the community. We have a need for these services Monday through Saturday, and welcome you for any amount of time you can spare.
Education and Recreation
The LightHouse Education and Recreation Program offers a wide range of activities for individuals of all ages to gain confidence and independence. Some of the activities currently offered include arts and crafts, ceramics, chorus, indoor rock climbing, yoga and bowling. By sharing your talents, skills and expertise, you help to enrich the lives of participants.
You may help us provide these services by participating in our current offerings. If you have skills in another activity, please feel free to suggest it as a possibility. Please let us know if you are interested in volunteering with our youth or adult program.
Enchanted Hills Camp (EHC)
Enchanted Hills Camp is 311 acres of splendor, located in the heart of Napa Valley wine country. In this beautiful setting, campers of all ages are provided an opportunity to gain self-confidence and independence. We welcome both individual and group volunteers. Come be a part of the magic of EHC this summer! Visit our EHC page to learn more about camp.
Support Service Providers
Do you have skills in American Sign Language and/or tactile communication? If so, consider volunteering as a Support Service Provider (SSP). We place SSPs all over the Bay Area to assist our deaf-blind clients in completing daily living activities. These positions entail working one-on-one with clients in their homes in order to complete a variety of tasks. Whether it is reading mail, drafting correspondence or grocery shopping, you will enhance the independence and productivity of these individuals.
