Volunteer FAQs

Can I volunteer only in San Francisco?

Not necessarily. While many of our volunteer opportunities are at our San Francisco office, we do have a need for volunteers in the community. Some opportunities exist for: Personal Service Providers, Support Service Providers,
Enchanted Hills Camp volunteers and volunteers at our two satellite locations in San Rafael and Eureka. If you are interested in volunteering outside of our San Francisco office, please contact Keyatta Shade, Community Volunteer Outreach Coordinator, to discuss your interests and availability.

What qualifications do I need to become a volunteer?

There are no specific requirements to volunteer at the LightHouse other than a strong desire to help out. However, good communication and people skills will be beneficial for working directly with our clients.

I sent in an application but have not heard back from anyone.

Typically, all applicants will be contacted within two weeks of the LightHouse receiving an application. If you are not contacted within this time, please call to be sure that your application was received.

How old do I have to be to volunteer?

Generally, the LightHouse prefers volunteers be at least 18 years old. However, we do make exceptions for youths who are interested in assisting in our office under supervision, and for school groups if they have younger individuals who are interested in volunteering. These decisions will be made on a case-by-case basis. Give us a call if you are under the age of 18 and would like to inquire about volunteering,.

Can I volunteer with my family?

Definitely! The LightHouse encourages families to volunteer their time together. We have many opportunities that allow families to work together to assist our participants.

Can I volunteer to complete community service hours ordered by the courts?

Yes, although your opportunities to assist may be limited. Additionally, the LightHouse reserves the right to refuse volunteers depending on the type and severity of the offense.

Do new volunteers receive training?

All volunteers must attend Vision Loss Awareness Training before volunteering. This training is designed to provide a general overview of some common causes of blindness, and some alternative tools and techniques to help adjust to living with vision loss.

What type of commitment do I have to make?

Typically, LightHouse volunteers are asked to commit to six months of service and sign an agreement to this effect. Exceptions are made for students who are looking to fulfill a service requirement for a class.

Will I be able to get a reference after volunteering my time?

Sure! If you would like a reference, please contact the Community Volunteer Outreach Coordinator. References will be based on an individual’s work performance while at the LightHouse.
